Sinai Health’s 10th anniversary gives us occasion to both celebrate and reflect on how far we have come. Our achievements of this past decade are a direct result of the dedication and compassion that define who we are as individuals and as an organization.

In 2015, we came together to combine the resources, expertise and a shared vision for Mount Sinai Hospital, Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital (then Bridgepoint Active Healthcare), the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI), and to form an affiliation with Circle of Care. Our goal was to become leaders in the delivery of high-quality, integrated health care for the communities we serve.

Since then, our collective strengths have helped us accomplish that goal by providing a continuum of excellent and compassionate care to patients. We are proud of our well-earned reputation as a leading academic organization in the areas of care, research and education.

While impossible to list the many successes we have achieved over the past 10 years, there are a few that truly exemplify the power of working together as Sinai Health. First and foremost are the thoughtfully designed care pathways, partnerships and collaborations across our Hospitals. These include streamlined referrals, direct transfers and access to expertise — all of which provide patients with seamless transitions and better outcomes. We invested in the renovation and renewal of our buildings and campuses with the completion of Renew Sinai Phase 3A at Mount Sinai Hospital and the naming of Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, which included expanding both academic and clinical services.

Another example of our strength in unity is the incorporation of Hennick Bridgepoint into our academic partnership with the University of Toronto. This has allowed us to build upon our existing expertise and develop specialized care programs to serve the distinct needs of our community. At Hennick Bridgepoint, we created a formal Division of Hospital Medicine and a Division of Physiatry under the umbrella of our Department of Medicine, and also established an Inter-Departmental Division of Palliative Care.

Integrating our leadership teams and clinical support functions was another priority for Sinai Health from the start. Together, we set out on a journey to discover the shared Purpose and Values that would guide our organization forward. More than 1,600 employees, learners, physicians, scientists and volunteers gave shape to those core principles that evolved from the legacy of our two founding hospitals. Little did we know how soon they would be tested.

The COVID-19 pandemic validated our belief that we are greater together than the sum of our parts. And, were we ever great together. At Mount Sinai, our Microbiology Lab was lauded for performing more than three million COVID-19 tests. The LTRI earned 341 external grants and more than $24 million in funding for COVID-19 research projects. Hennick Bridgepoint accepted the highest number of patient transfers of all post-acute care hospitals in Ontario and our system partner, Circle of Care, delivered essential care in the community to keep older adults safe and out of the hospital.

Whether by design or by necessity, our successes are solidly rooted in a culture of quality and innovation in care that is embodied by each and every one of our people. It is this unwavering commitment to excellence that allows us to reach this milestone with pride and continued ambition.

Looking ahead, we plan on continuing to expand our role along the care continuum. More than anything, our vision of discovering and delivering life-changing care remains strong, readying us to meet the health-care challenges of tomorrow.
